Last week saw over 100,000 mobile and tech enthusiasts descend on our city for the Mobile World Congress, the largest gathering for the mobile industry worldwide and the most important week in Barcelona’s already diverse tech and startup calendar. In attendance at 4YFN 2018 and Mobile World Congress, we witnessed cutting-edge new robotics, futuristic VR experiences, cutting-edge automobile technology and so much more. The week brought together industry leaders, brand new startups, enthusiasts, investors, accelerators and thought leaders to give us all an insight into how mobile technology will transform the way we live in the years and decades to come. It was an event which cemented Barcelona’s position as Europe’s leading tech and innovation hub.
Though this was a truly global event, and we witnessed visitors coming to Barcelona from countries all over the world, it was also a showcase of the immense talent here in Barcelona. Of course, fond readers of Barcinno will be already familiar with household names and success stories such as Travelperk, B-Wom, Fluttr, Signaturit, iContainers or Byhours. However, 4YFN highlights hundreds of brand new startups too, and we discovered a number of new disruptive Barcelona-based startups across a range of industries at the event. In this list, we bring you a run-down of 5 of the most exciting homegrown Barcelona startups we met at 4YFN – keep your eye on them, these are ones to watch!
Top 5 Barcelona Startups At 4YFN 2018
Boxmotions
It would be impossible not to mention Boxmotions in this list, the winner of the startup category of the 4YFN 2018 Awards. Their product is an on-demand physical storage service that means you can manage your storage needs online without the need for any heavy lifting or transportation. Founded in 2015, Boxmotions have seen great success in the last few months. You can expect to see them hitting headlines in the months to come, fresh off the back of winning the big prize at 4YFN 2018.
Wisar
Wisar launched at 4YFN just last year, and this year they stormed to success as this year’s winners of the Hack_D_Gap Global Challenge. 9-5 rigid office schedules are a thing of the past, and Wisar has kickstarted a work revolution with its flexible talent platform that promotes better work-life balance and increased flexibility for professionals. Its outstanding female-led team is addressing diversity and representation in the workplace via a solution which matches professionals and businesses.
Sandra Arévalo, its Founder & CEO says she ‘can’t conceive a world with unemployed highly skilled professionals in a globally interconnected society’, and we look forward to seeing them revolutionize the world of work, and the position of women within it, in the years to come.
Cocooking
Cocooking is an exciting Barcelona-based newcomer, bringing together communities through food and home-cooking. The idea is that ‘one day I cook for you, one day you cook for me’: use their app to suggest a dish, others sign up to share that dish with you, and you make connections with new people over a nourishing meal. Cocooking encourage us to be more sociable within our companies, eliminate waste and build communities. Their app brings the sharing economy into the world of food and takes the ‘tupper’ to a new level. These guys are one to watch.
Manzaning
Manzaning is a clever startup that aims to give a much-needed boost to local stores against the backdrop of globalization. Via their easy-to-use app, customers can buy products from freshly baked bread to flowers, and have them delivered straight to their home. You can combine goods from different stores in one order and if your order exceeds 65€ the delivery is free, otherwise there’s a small fee.
Thanks to a chat feature that allows its users to communicate with the local shops they’re ordering from, Manzaning have found a great way of ensuring high customer satisfaction rates, and forming connections between local shops and neighborhood communities.
DNA FAMILY BOOK
DNA FAMILY BOOK is not just another startup riding the buzz of DNA storing. Instead, it focuses on a much bigger goal: health and the prevention of hereditary diseases. Almost one-third of hereditary diseases can be avoided with current genetic test methods, but ,in order to do so, the DNAs of relatives are required. Unfortunately, few people preserve family DNA samples. This forward-thinking startup is here to change that by making it super easy to obtain and preserve relatives’ DNA in order to detect and prevent diseases. Simply take a sample and mail it to their labs and they take care of the rest. A game-changing concept and we look forward to witnessing their progress in 2018.
So there you have it – 5 dynamic Barcelona startups to watch in future as they take the tech world by storm! We were inspired by so many of the startups showcasing at 4YFN 2018, and these present just a tiny snapshot of the talent on display. Join us in the coming weeks as we give you an insight into more innovative startups we encountered during Mobile World Congress week.

I tried to find cocooking on the App Store but couldn’t find it, there was a similar app also to share meals in your community called Sharood App.
Tried it with some friends this weekend and was a fun experience.
