Caravelo recently switched out their office with a microbrewery, and pen and paper with beers in the hunt for new employees. Barcinno tagged along on Caravelos first beercruit in Barcelona.
Many companies struggle to find good people (especially engineers and developers) through the normal channels of employment, and they wanted to try something new.
“To be honest, we are quite frustrated about the ROI on job listings or any other classical approach, so we have decided to invest all that money in free beers for talented developers”, the CIO at Caravelo JoseLuis told Barcinno earlier this month.
For those who dont know, Caravelo is the startup that helps airlines all over the world fill up their planes with easy integrations and automated solutions. They are more than a well reqognized startup in Barcelona and have won several prices, such as the Disrupted by mobile price, given by 4YFN during last years congress.

Check the chemistry
To get to the place with free beers, the attendees have to enter an easy pull request on Github, and the location is revealed, this time at Garage Beer Co in Eixample.
Anders Hedström is a business and product developer at Caravelo and has been with company almost from the start, more than five years ago.
“I was one of the guys at the office that didn’t quite understand the concept in the start, but now I see how we can check out the chemistry between the office and the potential employees, its great”, says Hedström.
All of the attendees Barcinno talked to at the bar, loved how they got to meet the employees at Caravelo, not just a HR person at an interview.
Also the CTO at Caravelo, Marc Fornós, loved the new approach on hiring people.
“With the traditional channels there’s no feelings and a lack of relationship”, he says.
More beercruits in the future
This was the first beercruit for Caravelo, but not the last, according to the company.
At the moment Caravelo has three openings.
They now work with seven airlines from different parts of the world, and they´re looking for more business.
“Right now things are going great, we have a lot to do, and we need more people. But working in a startup is not for everyone, and thats understandable, but we hope this recruitment tactic will pay off”, says Hedström.
