A lot has been said about Pokemon GO this year after its initial release back in July. The game was referred as a “social media phenomenon” and had 231 million people engaged in 1.1 billion interactions in their first month!
Still dozens of people are congregating at the emblematic places of the Barcelona like Sagrada Familia, Arc de Triomf , FC Barcelona Miniestadi and Agbar Tower to find the Gyms and PokeStops. Now that the whole media blast is over and the massive popularity of the game it’s starting to cool down, we decided to make a little research on our own about augmented reality Games in Barcelona.
Just to find out that Barcelona’s startup DenDen is creating the next Pokemon Go, but for a greater good.
Barcelona a hub for augmented reality
Barcelona is known for having strong communities all around and the augmented reality is no Exception. The i2CAT Foundation, Barcelona the Lab, ENTI and Labs4Reality are some of the biggest companies supporting this tech.
A lot has been done in the city in the past couple of years to develop new concepts and ideas related to augmented reality games. From Hackathons, Innovation Labs to Demodays, groups of developers and creatives have been trying to produce augmented reality applications in Barcelona. And according to the Twenytu team “Although Pokémon Go has been a revolution; it’s not the first augmented reality game that exists. The Barcelona studio Novarama pioneered with the creation of a game called Invizimals in 2014 for Play Station that, although with less success, was a hit worldwide.”
From all the companies doing some really interesting work, the one that drew our attention the most was the Startup DenDen. A local business that supports local and independent business by hosting and maintaining their online identity and visibility
An augmented reality game that will help people earn money while they support local businesses
Since 2015 DenDen has been helping hundreds of shops in central Barcelona gain and control their visibility on online maps. But their service doesn’t end just there. They’re not only helping busy local shop owners to map their identity but, through an augmented reality game, want people to earn real money while helping shops in their community.
Their game called Forbidden City, wants people to help them map their community local and independent shops while having fun and also earning some extra cash. The story behind the game is that 10 years from now, Unicorp has finally achieved its goal of ruling the world with one product. To beat monopoly 3 factions now battle for control of the underground economy by creating shop networks through new technology. By scanning the remnants of real world shops and adding them into Forbidden City, players will expand and defend their underground system while earning some money in return.
Barcleona startup DenDen is looking for a – Javascript Developer
As much fun their new augmented reality game sounds it still under development. DenDen is looking for a Javascript Developer experienced in React Native, Firebase and Ruby on Rails for Android/iOS to help them make their community much stronger.
