Much has been said, written about and postulated when it comes to the amazing startup life. The freedom, flexible work hours, the freedom, the atmosphere…, but let’s be honest, only some of that is true. The rest is hype. Most of us working on the startup world still go to an office and spend the majority of our time sitting behind a desk and mostly interacting with people through a computer screen.
If you are lucky like me, you will spend around 20% of your time networking outside the office space, going to events or traveling to meet clients face-to-face. However, if you are a developer, designer or an inside sales or marketing rep, most likely you will spend most of your day at the office, sitting in your chair and barely noticing the change of seasons!
And you know what? Enough! We left the corporate world for a reason! Even though we don’t work in 2×2 cubicles anymore, we still need a little incentive to escape the oppressive monotony and the homogenization of our work existence. If you feel like your self-imposed cubicle life is suffocating you, that your ideas are flying away and you deserve much more than staring at your computer screen, then keep reading!
Coworkation, a Spain-based startup with Australian roots, recently launched in Barcelona, offering inspiring coworking retreats in stunning locations around the world.
The startup that fights for your location independence!
Achieving location independence is not as simple as it may seem. Getting the right balance of life and work is not that easy either, in fact many believe it’s a lifelong adjustment. That’s why Coworkation offers short, 1-2 week trips where every aspect of the trip is designed to help you work and find inspiration in what you do. Since then they been looking for the most inspirational locations around the world such as Bali, Thailand, Costa Rica, Croatia, and of course, our lovely home Barcelona!
The motive behind this startup comes from the personal story of Stuart Jones, the founder of Coworkation, when he was looking for the freedom to work and live from wherever he wanted.
“My ongoing personal workation showed me the benefits and power that working whilst on the road can provide. Finding inspiration, creativity and imagination, increased productivity, being happy gets you into the right state to work, things are put into perspective, you tend to analyse yourself more, stepping out of your comfort zone strengthens resilience and flexibility and there is a sense of freedom which makes you feel like your boundaries are limitless.”
“Going to the office” now has a whole new meaning
If you’re reading this and feeling kind of depressed for not traveling as much as you wanted and been in a startup world that feels much like a corporate world, don’t despair! The collective definitions of the employee/employer relationship are changing and there are several companies and startups that are noticing the importance of giving their employees more freedom and the advantages of allowing them to have a work-life balance. There is an increasing global trend towards freelance; the gig economy is just one name for it. In the future labor market, even doctors and lawyers we will be hired or retained for a specific job or activity and when it’s done all parties will move to the next one.
In the end, we are all moving towards working when and wherever we want. Becoming a geographically independent freelancer is possible and starting with smaller steps like a short trip sailing around the world might just be the push you’ve been waiting for!
The next series of short trips with Coworkation will be held in the Mediterranean, Bali and Thailand, and you get a special discount using the code: barc1nno
