Barcelona startup thethings.io has announced a €250.000 seed round to become the Amazon Web Services for the IoT world. Led by CEO Marc Pous, thethings.io helps businesses (and individuals) connect their devices to the Internet so they can easily interact with other “smart” devices. The team currently resides in the Wayra Barcelona accelerator program, which also participated in the recent funding along with 101 Startups, Taurus Fund, Toubkal Partners and individual angels from ESADE BAN.
Founded in 2014, thethings.io lives by the slogan:
“You Create Cool Things, We Connect Them To The Internet“
With an estimated 25 billion devices expected to be connected to the internet by the year 2020 [1], TheThings.io aims to become an Amazon Web Services-like platform for the IoT movement. Entrepreneurs and large corporations can save valuable time and resources by outsourcing the “connection” process and hosting it in the cloud.
Hardware is Hard
When creating a hardware device, companies already face an uphill challenge to develop the design, build the prototype, manage the production process and optimize their supply chain, and that doesn’t include making the device “smart”. In order to connect the device to the internet, there must be a mobile app and a platform hosted in the cloud to manage and store all of the data that is generated by each device. thethings.io massively reduces the time and costs associated with this process AND offers developers a visualization and data analysis backend so they can track, measure and analyze the mountains of data being collected.
The new funding will be invested into marketing, business development and communication in order to share the turnkey platform across the US, Europe and China where the majority of IoT growth is taking place. thethings.io already counts over 2.500 users and thousands of connected devices managed by large corporates like Telefonica, Sigfox and Econais. The business model is quite simple: €1 per item connected per year. The backend analytics platform is free and you can start connected devices with a personalized code snippet in under 60 seconds.
The founders, Marc Pous (CEO), Jose Manuel Pérez (CTO), Marti Zamora (Data Scientist), Alfredo Sanz (Advisor) and Mischa Dohler (Advisor), will continue to invest into the technical development of their platform providing companies worldwide with a turnkey solution for making their hardware devices “smart”.
