Wayra recently announced that their most recent class of startups out of the Barcelona incubator have raised more than €3m from outside investors following their Demo Day last week. Acting as a prelude to the TechCrunch Mobile BCN event and taking advantage of the influx of industry leading investors in town for Mobile World Congress, Wayra successfully hosted their 2nd Demo Day in Spain in less than a year.
The results clearly represent the level of commitment Telefonica’s world leading incubator is producing in Spain and across the world. In addition to carefully, hand-picking the most innovative and disruptive business models available, Wayra has teamed up with Global 500 corporations and proven entrepreneurial business leaders to provide a dynamic environment and toolset for their startups to perfect their business model.
Gary Stewart, director of Wayra Spain, stressed the excellent work done by the entrepreneurs during their stay at the academy in Barcelona, pointing out that “they were able to build solid and scalable products in just a few months, which ensures a favourable growth plan. A good example of this is that even during the acceleration period they started to close a circle that adds up to over three million Euros in external investment, a sign of their potential for the future”.
Details will be coming out over the coming weeks tracking where these projects land and who has invested. In the mean time, keep an eye out for the next class of startups to enter Wayra Barcelona’s 2nd edition starting in April. They have narrowed the list down to the top 40 and intend to cut it down to 20 by next week. The final list of chosen startups will receive their invitations by the end of March. With 3.444 global applicants from more than 30 different countries, it’s clear that Wayra has created a highly coveted incubation program.
